Mr. Allen, a former AACS Board of Education member, created the Betty and Gerald Allen School Supply Fund with a gift in the amount of $58,113.72. The fund will allow for $5,000 per year starting in August of 2020 to be spent on school supplies such as crayons, paper, pencils, scissors, glue, pens and other basic school supplies for students in Kindergarten through 6th grade. The fund calls for the recipient teachers to be notified that the supplies are coming from the Betty and Gerald Allen School Supply Fund.
Mr. Allen was a 1974 graduate of Ashtabula High School. He served on the AACS Board of Education from 2002 until 2003 and also served as a substitute teacher in the district. He passed away on March 9, 2018. He was preceded in death by his sister, Betty, who shares the name of the fund.
Betty Allen was a 1964 graduate of Ashtabula High School and a long time elementary school teacher. She taught from 1968 until her retirement in 1998. For 28 years, Betty taught in the Ashtabula Area City Schools as a first or third grade teacher at Washington, Chestnut, and Plymouth Elementary Schools.
Superintendent Mark Potts said “we are moved by the generosity of the Allen family and the forethought to continue to bless the teachers and students of our community even after their passing. What a beautiful gift and expression of love for their community. We are very thankful for this gift as will be the numerous students that will benefit from it for many years.”
